Lawn Scarifying Warrington
Cheshire Lawn Doctor provides lawn scarifying Warrington for all lawns.
If your lawn is full of moss and thatch then it will more than likely need scarifying or mechanical raking. There are many different ways to remove moss and thatch from using a spring tine rake to the easier, more professional method of using a heavy duty scarifier, which will ensure the removal of the majority of moss and thatch within your lawn.
Grasses propagate by seed with some also producing side shoots or runners. These side shoots help the grass spread and are either just above the soil surface (stolons) or just below it (rhizomes).
Stolons and rhizomes die to be replaced by younger stronger plants. The problem is that the growing part of the grass plant (crown) together with the stolons and rhizomes contain a chemical compound called lignin which makes them very slow to rot or decay. And because they don’t rot they start to build up, layer upon layer until there is too much. This is thatch!
Not every grass produces thatch and some more than others. Rye grass is a typical example and why it makes it perfect for thatch less lawns.
This layer of thatch, if left untreated, will get thicker and denser over a period of time. It is a mass of slowly decaying grass that the roots will begin to grow in to. It acts like a barrier between the roots and the soil and prevents root penetration. Roots will grow in the thatch and it acts as a sponge soaking up moisture and nutrients when applied and prevents them from entering the soil. The soil will soon become dry and lacking in nutrients and once warm weather comes the thatch will dry out quickly and your lawn will turn brown quickly.
Not only does your lawn need scarifying to remove the thatch layer it alson needs hollow tine aerating to aid with the movement of air and water and allow the fast decomposition of the grass as it dies back.
